My Cocaine Habit

The other night my eleven-year-old son Stein read several of my blog posts. I was really proud of him for his interest in theology and his thoughtful questions. But afterwards I heard him whispering to Rick: "Did Mom really used to have a cocaine habit?"

I suddenly remembered that in my discussion of sin and suffering in "The Curse," I wrote: "Let's say my cocaine habit caused Ingrid's disabilities." I told Stein that I never used cocaine--that was a hypothetical example. "Well," he said, "you should have said it differently then, because some readers might have stopped reading your blog after that."

So to all you readers who were offended: COME BACK!!! I DIDN'T EVEN USE TYLENOL DURING MY PREGNANCIES!! AND I'VE BEEN OFF METH FOR YEARS! ;) (Hopefully they heard me across the blogosphere.)

Thank goodness for test readers!

I love your new design and I did not take you literally when I read that, but thank you for the clarification :)

Good! I kind of figured it was an attention-getting title, though. :)

I'm glad you like the design. They did an amazing job!

That is so funny. And so like Stein - so serious. At least he asked Rick in a discrete manner. :)

Well, he told me afterwards that he didn't really believe I'd used cocaine (so typical of my kids when they say something cute to deny that they were serious afterwards--Chelsea used to do that, too); he was just concerned about how my readers who don't know me would react. :)

Stein just graduated from DARE with his fifth grade class last spring, so he is the resident expert on drugs.

I guess it is good that you clarified that - Seeing as i don't know you, when i read that about cocaine in the post you are talking about, i didn't actually know whether you were being literal, or just using it as an example. It didn't actually make any difference to me - even if you were a cocaine addict, it wouldn't have made me stop reading, but i guess it was open to mis-interpretation. Becky

Becky,

I appreciate your input, and it makes me glad that Stein brought it to my attention! Not because I'd be less likely to read a former drug addict's blog (actually, I'd be more impressed), but I would be less likely to read it if she said she didn't have a "big" sin during her pregnancy. I'd say cocaine addiction qualifies. :)

Sometimes it's hard to know how others are interpreting what I say. It's clear to me, so obviously it's crystal clear, right? ;) So I appreciate all feedback!
